While there are many expats, some stand out among the most famous. If you’re struggling to come up with a definition for the term, think of it as an outsider living the life of an intern. That is, a person from a country who is at home (for work or pleasure) in a country of which he is not a citizen. Understanding the more complex definition or reading up on the particular expat tax law that may affect people who choose to live abroad is quite complex, and yet many choose to do so.

Because we are still celebrating America’s Independence Day as we approach mid-July and thinking of those who are “other” in another country, we have expats in our brains. Today we present you some of the best, or at least the most famous!

Ernest Hemingway

The writer Ernest Hemingway is well known (as you may know if you’ve seen Midnight in Paris) for having traveled and written extensively in Paris, France. The exchange rate made Paris a great place to live and as such attracted a large number of interesting people in the 1920s.

Hemingway’s circle (referred to in The Sun Also Rises as the “Lost Generation”) included Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and Ezra Pound. The group of artists and writers produced a great deal of art during their expatriate years.

Julia child

Julia Child has often been described as the most famous of all expat housewives, although it was much more than the term could imply. The chef, television personality and author joined the Office of Strategic Services when they found her too tall to enlist in the Army Women’s Corps. She worked in China and met her husband Paul Cushing Child. The two moved to Paris, where they lived. The boy taught cooking, put on a show and composed several books.

Charlize Theron

Theron is a more modern expat and was born in South Africa. He has lived in Milan, New York and now Los Angelis and speaks English so fluently that you would never know it is not his first language. His first language is Afrikaans and, at one point, he had a very strong accent. His name is pronounced differently from what you have also heard; she changed it to give it an American sound. Although she has since become a naturalized citizen of the United States, she retains South African citizenship.

Keanu reeves

Although you probably won’t guess, Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut to an English mother and an American father from Hawaii. Shortly after his birth, Keanu’s father left the family and his mother designed the costumes and performed. The family moved to Australia, New York, and Toronto. In 1969, Keanu moved to Los Angeles and began an acting career. He is a US citizen by his father, but has Canadian citizenship by naturalization. You are also entitled to British citizenship, thanks to Mom!

Expats come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of fame! You will be surprised how many people in your life or around you were born or have lived elsewhere!
